Your Spring Electrical Maintenance Guide

Spring is playing peek-a-boo in Central Alberta. It’s a great time to do an electrical safety checklist for your home. We have a few essential tips to get you started.

  1.  Inspect your outlets and switches

Let’s go back to the basics. Check your outlets and switches to make sure they are in working order. Check to see if they are powering devices and make sure they are not cracked or broken.

You don’t want to see any exposed wiring, which can be dangerous – especially if you have pets or young children crawling about.

  1.  Declutter and make space

There’s no time like the Spring to declutter and clean. Ensure all your electrical appliances don’t have anything blocking them. This includes your electrical control panel – you don’t want it to be hard to reach in emergencies.

  1. Test your GFCIs

Your GFCI’s are your Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters. These look exactly like a normal electrical outlet but has a red button and a reset button in the middle.

The red button is basically a circuit interrupter. If pressed, it will turn off any device connected to the outlet. You must press the reset button to turn the device back on. If both those buttons work, you are in the clear.

  1. Upgrade your lighting LED

Switching to LED lights is a great way to save money on your monthly electricity bills. They are also a safer option than traditional lights. You have many options when making the jump to LED such as simply buying new LED bulbs.

You can also opt for Wi-Fi controlled, smart LED bulbs that you can control with your phone. From your phone, you can set schedules and timers for LED bulbs as well as see your consumption.

  1. Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

This is an important part of your spring electrical maintenance. These detectors are literal lifesavers . Test each detector in your home and ensure they have fresh batteries. You might also want to consider a whole home fire alarm system. Properly designed, installed, and maintained fire alarm systems can easily detect an incipient fire before it is recognizable to the occupants. The allows more time and a safer environment for the occupants of the structure to flee to safety.
